School holidays are now finished. No more damper cooking, long walks or fun trips to town!
As I waved goodbye to the kids, I thought that they were as pleased to be going back to school as, perhaps, I was to send them!
Now don’t get me wrong, I love having the kids at home and we always make sure we do lots of fun things over the time that they’re home, but there is something that mums and dads just can’t do… and that’s play like other kids!
I know both of mine were chomping at the bit to get back into the school playground with all their friends, but not necessarily the schoolwork!
I don’t miss having to make school lunches though!

Well, we got our wish! Holiday time arrived and two days in, we went fishing!
I was standing up on top of the sand dunes to take this photo of Anthony and Rochelle getting set up to catch ‘the big one’. I think, by the looks, Anthony is giving instructions!
We had a lovely big camp fire and the enjoyed the beautiful sunset and watched a nearly full moon rise over the dunes … but we didn’t catch a fish that was worth taking home!
We did catch one that Anthony let Hayden reel in – he felt very important! And by the time that had happened, we’d cooked our BBQ, finished our drinks and run out of wood, so we headed home.

See that red spot? Its my daughter off walking Rocket. I dropped her at the front of this paddock to walk up through the middle. It gives both her and Rocket time to explore, check out the insects that are about, or talk to the animals.
The cows are checking out what they’re both up to, but they won’t harm her at all. In fact they’re pretty used to people walking through their paddocks!
The tales she tells when she arrives home, shows that she has an over-active imagination, much like her mum’s!

There seems to be great competition between kids when it comes to their birthday cakes! Now, this is fine if you’re like my friend Gill and is a brilliant cook, decorator and everything else that goes on in the kitchen!
If you’re like me and struggle to get a cake to rise, let alone make it look like the picture that’s been chosen from the Women’s Weekly Birthday Book, you tend to dread birthdays!
Rochelle turned nine not that long ago and thankfully she liked this cake enough to take it to school. Now there’s only Hayden to go and I’m free of decorated birthday cakes until the next year!

Unexpectedly, a change in the weather netted us a couple of mm of rain. Looking out the window I commented to myself: ‘I’m not sure where that has come from.’
My little man, who’d run past as I was muttering obscenities about rain wrecking the dry feed and clothes on the line, did though. ‘It’s come from the clouds mum!’
After having quite a few problems with our power, a man from Horizon Power came out to take a look. Rochelle wondered around the corner, looking every bit of a farm kid, dressed in overalls, rubber boots and carrying her pet lamb, “Bugs” under one arm.
Observing the man for a while and linking the logo on the side of the car to the power bills, she asked ‘if the man was from Horizontal Power!’

Rochelle and Hayden were lucky enough to be given a basketball ring from their Gran, for Christmas.
Supposedly for the kids, it brought out the competitive nature in all the oldies, who tried to outdo each other in slam-dunking or defending the ring.
The kids watched open-mouthed as their Uncle Nick and Papa tried to get past each other to the hoop, with all sorts of illegal hip bumping and defending actions.
We had to foul them both of in the end! Out of everyone who vying for glory, I think the kids outdid us all — they seem to be a bit more flexible!
Aunty Ellie played a bit more sedately with kids, and here, Hayden has just shot a basket.

After the busy day of Christmas, we decided it was time to head to the beach and work off some of that extra pavlova and wine we had!
Some of my family that came for Christmas hadn’t been to Esperance before so we took off down to Thomas River in the Cape Arid National Park (the best beach in the world!) to have a run — or walk!
Magic blue seas, skies, and a beach to ourselves made for a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment, with the kids running rampant and the adults vainly trying to keep up.

Sarah Palin and her crew have nothing on these Condingup basketball mum’s (and dad’s)!
Well these aren’t all of them — the others are coaching, working in the canteen or bar, or just watching.
These are the people who travel, sometimes up to a 90km round trip, to take their kids to basketball on a Friday night.
They dodge rabbits and ‘roo’s, get leave passes from the chaser bin and (some) play the adult games later in the evening.
It’s so great to have this kind of activity in our small community, to be able to catch up every week and have a yarn and a few drinks!
